How to Reduce Image File Size Without Visible Quality Loss
Resolution, format and quality settings that shrink photos for email and websites.
A phone photo can easily weigh 4–8 MB, which is too much for email attachments, upload forms or websites. Fortunately you can shrink it a lot without anyone noticing.
1. Reduce the dimensions first
Pixel count affects file size more than anything else. Keeping a 4000-pixel-wide image that will display at 800 pixels is wasteful. Limiting the width to 1200–1600 pixels is enough for most uses and cuts size dramatically.
2. Adjust the quality
In lossy formats such as JPG and WebP, dropping quality from 100% to 75–80% reduces size noticeably while the eye usually cannot tell. Going below 60% can introduce blur and blocky artefacts.
3. Pick the right format
- JPG or WebP for photographs.
- PNG for logos, screenshots and images with transparency.
- WebP is usually smaller than JPG at the same quality on websites.
4. Compress without uploading
Many online tools upload your image to a server. Our compressor works entirely in your browser, so your files never leave your device, which is safer for personal photos and documents.
Practical targets
Aim for 500 KB – 1 MB for email attachments and 100–300 KB for website images. Compressed files do not replace the original, so always keep a copy of it.
